Monty Don. Celebrity Gardener
Mount Usher is laid out across 22 acres along the banks of the River Vartry
as it tumbles over a series of cascades on its way to the sea. It is a
lovely example of a true Robinsonian style of garden with its free-flowing
informality and natural design. At Mount Usher you’ll find over 5000 species
of plant, many of them rare and exotic, all grown organically, painting a
cacophony of colour throughout the season.
So many walks to explore as you lose yourself among towering trees and
delicate blooms or simply sit on one of the many benches overlooking the
river bends.
2009 saw the introduction of “Music at Mount Usher”. Greeted and enjoyed by
locals and visitors alike it was a great success. Even the true Irish summer
didn’t dampen the sound or the spirit, and the music played on. Once again
we are happy to introduce some of Irelands most talented musicians who will
be performing in the gardens every Saturday in July and August. String
Quartets, Jazz Trios, Champion Saxophonists, Harpists, Guitarist and
Flautists will all be taking part in Mount Usher’s 2nd Summer Music
Festival. Come and spread out a picnic blanket, enjoy some delicious
strawberries and cream and enjoy the music.
If the younger members of the family find low-decibel music less than
captivating then they can sit and decorate a unique ceramic plate or mug
with Rainbow Ceramics who will be joining us in the Garden every Saturday
from 3 to 5pm.
All of this before we even mention the renowned and award winning food at
the Avoca Café, the delicious goodies from the Courtyard Bakery or the
Greenhouse Shop, laden with plants, tools and gardening gifts. We have also
expanded the Greenhouse area into the Secret Garden, introducing a charming
mix of plants along with one of a kind antique and vintage finds. Furniture,
pots and planters, recycled accessories and many other treasures. Don’t tell
everyone or the secret will be out!
Mount Usher Gardens is one of the great gardens of the world and truly a
memorable day out for the entire family. Situated in the village of Ashford,
just 35 minutes on the N11 from Dublin, and close to Bray, Wicklow and
Arklow towns, it is only a stones throw from the historic site of
Glendalough, and a perfect destination lunch stop when visiting the Wicklow
mountains or on your journey to or from the South.
